American: Barbeque

Phillip's Bar-b-que
4307 Leimert Blvd. Crenshaw. 323/292-7613 (new branch closer to 10 freeway on Crenshaw)
At some point barbeque becomes so good that quality is a matter of preference for the novice. Nonetheless, the vibe, burning hot sauce, ribs, links and sliced beef have made a convert of me. Phillip's is my favourite barbeque in L.A.

Woody's
3446 W Slauson Ave, - Inglewood (323) 294-9443
Like any good barbeque pit, Woody's can be detected from a great distance by its smoky aroma. Rest assured, when you bite into the meat it will be every bit as tasty as you expect.

Greece's
901 S. La Brea Los Angeles, CA 90036 (310) 822-6026
A well kept secret barbeque spot, Greece's has a superfine pork rib slab and very deliberate service from an elderly dude who epitomizes the word "pitmaster". Plus it shares a minimall with the Bethel church! Smokiness is truly next to Godliness.

JR's Barbeque
3055 S. La Cienega Culver City, 310) 837-6838
The dude's friendliness is exceeded only by his barbeque, it's the real deal and generous. Rib tips are awesome.

Baby Blues Barbeque
444 Lincoln Blvd, Venice 310 396 7675
Fine barbeque with particularly commendable sides (although blue cheese in mac n'cheese is debatable). Memphis ribs good and smoky though not quite the equal of the Crenshaw standouts in my opinion. Pulled pork not as vinegary as that served in Chapel Hill. Pricier than the others on this page.
